Jade Fon received over 200 awards for his watercolor paintings, and participated in numerous museum exhibitions. His Asilomar Watercolor Workshops, in Monterey, continued for 30 years with many famous artists conducting art classes there. This painting is a very rare fine art documentation of the Chinatown night club scene during the late 1930's. Much like the Cotton Club in Harlem, these clubs were frequented by the celebrities and politicians of the day. They were the clubs to see and be seen in. Recognition of the importance of these nightclubs to Chinese American and American social/cultural history has begun in earnest with newly published books in 2014, including one by the well known novelist Lisa See, titled China Dolls.
